Are you a U.S. Board Certified Pediatrician interested in coming to Ontario to practice?

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) has streamlined the pathway to independent practice for select situations

If you have:

  1. An acceptable medical doctorate (MD) degree
  2. Completed pediatrics residency in the US
  3. Completed an acceptable qualifying exam (e.g. USMLE)
  4. An independent license in the U.S. (or are eligible for one)

AND hold U.S. Board Certification

You are eligible to apply for and receive a restricted certificate of registration for independent practice (unsupervised) in your scope in Ontario.

N.B. If you do NOT hold U.S. American Board of Pediatrics certification, a pathway ‘C’ is also available with supervised practice for 3 years. Should you write your ABP during this time, you become eligible to apply as above.

STEP-BY-STEP PROCESS

  1. Apply to the CPSO through their online portal.
  2. Look for jobs:
    • Health Force Ontario
    • Pedsontario.ca Jobs Board
    • Cold call/email hospitals/clinics of interest to you; reach out to pedsontario@gmail.com to ask where to look!
  3. Apply for immigration status/work visa:
    1. Family Class
      • If you have a spouse or parent who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, they can sponsor you without a formal job offer.
    2. Federal Skilled Worker Program – Express Entry
      • If you are planning to immigrate to Canada permanently, you can apply for this program, which does tend to look favorably upon physicians.
    3. Temporary Foreign Worker Program
      • If you are only planning to work in Canada temporarily
      • You must first have a formal job offer in hand.
      • Your prospective employer must provide a “Labor Market Impact Assessment” stating that there is no Canadian citizen or PR able to fill the job vacancy.
      • You must have your approved certificate of registration from CPSO
      • You must complete an IRCC medical examination
      • You must satisfy other immigration eligibility requirements.

THE ROYAL COLLEGE

There is now an expedited pathway to Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) fellowship for internationally trained physicians. RCPSC fellowship is not required for independent practice, but may be desired and/or requested by some employers.

Briefly, fellowship can be obtained after a short 2 year period of independent practice (reduced from 5 years) along with successfully completing your RCPSC Pediatric examination.
